I use to use a body lotion head to toe on my whole body. Then I found out it was a level seven out of ten on Environmental Working Groups website for cancer causing ingredients. I was so mad! You know the old saying, “you are what you eat?
Well, you’re also what you wear on your skin all day! I was so mad because this lotion was a professional product and it had a natural plant on it. I thought it was natural but it was not at all. This is what we call “green washing”. When companies market with a plant on the packaging or use the words, “all natural.” Well, don’t be fooled! You need to take a good look at the ingredients.
Another time, I was at the beach boardwalk and I forgot my Burt’s Bees 🐝 chapstick. (Before I sold Jane Iredale’s nontoxic makeup line.)
I ran onto the boardwalk and bought a tube of a famous brand chapstick with sunscreen. I started using it every day and for the next month I had a metal taste in my mouth. I could not figure out. It finally hit me one day as I was applying to my lips. I realized, it all started that day at the beach. I got up and looked at the ingredients and it had oxybenzone, which is an ingredient commonly used in sunscreen that turns into a carcinogenic in the sun. Why that is not illegal I do not understand. Wow! :o It is also killing the coral reefs all around the world. Hawaii has banned it from being used on the islands. The best way to find a sunscreen that does not have oxybenzone in it will usually say “Reef Safe” or physical block like a Titanium Dioxide.

It is so frustrating that in America we use so many chemicals. Europe has banned all of them, it’s illegal to use there.

*M-, O-, and P-phenylenediamine - used in hair dyes, which irritates and sensitizes the skin, damages DNA and can cause cancer
